Halloween is basically one giant invitation to pretend to be someone else.
For one night, wearing a mask is completely normal.
The strange thing is, some people wear invisible masks every day.
You could walk into school laughing with friends and acting completely fine, even after a really difficult night at home. Nobody knew how stressed you actually felt because pretending everything was okay had become almost automatic.
Sometimes putting on that emotional mask feels easier than explaining what’s really happening.
You don’t have to tell everyone your story. You don’t owe classmates, friends, or anyone else every detail about your family or what happens at home.
Still, everyone deserves at least one place where they don’t have to pretend.
Maybe that’s with a close friend, counselor, teacher, coach, relative, or another person you trust. Someone you can tell, “Things aren’t really okay right now,” without needing to explain everything.
Halloween masks can be fun.
The ones you feel like you have to wear every day can get pretty heavy.
Find someone who makes it feel safe to take yours off.
