Sometimes the person laughing the loudest at lunch is carrying something nobody else knows about.
A teen might show up to school, joke with friends, finish assignments, and seem completely fine. Meanwhile, part of their brain is still thinking about what happened at home the night before or wondering what they’ll walk into when they get home.
It can feel strange when nobody around you knows how different your life feels behind closed doors.
Sometimes keeping things private feels easier. Maybe explaining everything sounds exhausting. Maybe there’s fear that people won’t understand. Maybe there’s just no idea where to begin.
You don’t have to tell everyone.
Having even one safe person who knows that things are difficult can make a difference. That might be a friend, teacher, counselor, coach, relative, or another adult you trust. You don’t have to share every detail either. Sometimes saying, “Things are kind of hard at home right now,” is enough to start.
Everyone has parts of their life that other people can’t see.
You deserve somewhere you don’t have to pretend everything is okay.
