Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. Everywhere you look, people are talking about what they’re thankful for. Family, friends, good memories, and all the things that make life great.
But what happens when life doesn’t feel so great?
One teen sat at Thanksgiving dinner listening to everyone share what they were grateful for. There were things to appreciate, but there was also a lot happening at home that made life stressful. Feeling thankful and unhappy at the same time seemed confusing, almost like one feeling canceled out the other.
Here’s the thing: You can be grateful for what you have and still wish some things were different.
Having a parent or loved one who lives with mental illness can bring complicated emotions. You might appreciate the good moments while also feeling frustrated, worried, or exhausted by the difficult ones.
Those feelings don’t make you ungrateful. They make you human.
Gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about recognizing the good without ignoring the hard stuff.
This Thanksgiving, give yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling. There’s room for all of it.
